What a Gift Should Mean
So, I decided that gifts given between friends, ideally should have the same value as an “Easter egg” in movies or a “trophy” in video games. It’s something that doesn’t need to have particular value. Instead, the intent should be the sentiment that it expresses.
I want the present that I give to someone. To be a curio, a novelty, an Easter egg in their life, which says “Joe” gave this to me, and whether or not it is of particular use. Well, that becomes arbitrary.
Imagine if every friend you ever made… had given you one thing, that they see as somehow representative of your personality. I bet most of us would have quite the collection of little Knick knacks.
It would be something we could all look at when feeling down about ourselves and say in affirmation of ourselves. “Look at all the lives I have been a part of and how diverse of a person I am seen as being.”
I think having the perfect moment earlier with a coworker was in a way, a memory that will forever have an Easter egg in my heart. We grew up in the same town and know like all the same people, but somehow never hung out until roughly 2 years ago.
We share several very close friends but never met back in the day. And talking about these old friends was great. It really put a smile on my face.
Let me paint the scene for you, my friend let’s call her T was sitting down the bar from me, wearing a neon green beanie and red sweatshirt looking content with Christmas lights in the background. Her eyes were bright blue and very animated while talking.
There was a lot of things to talk about, cause anyone that lives in this town knows there’s more than a few characters. Luckily, we know mostly the ones on the harmless side of things. So, there were a lot of smiles.
Though remembering all those people of days gone past. It made me realize how much I wish, I had a singular memento of every friend I’d ever made. Something given to me by them, something they thought represented my personality. I don’t have just such a collection of Knick Knacks but if I did; I would consider myself a rich man.
